My first order of business is to gather natural materials, or photograph them in their environment. I keep my iPhone handy to capture whatever shape, pattern, color, or texture catches my attention and archive images for later use. I might get a ‘gift’ from a neighbor’s garden, or pull off the road to gather some leaves from that tree I’d been admiring, or acquire specimens from a winemaker friend’s vineyard.

Next I often combine techniques such as photography, printmaking and collage to produce imagery evoking a more abstract view of nature, often with a strong graphic approach. Further concept development happens digitally to produce either a single artwork or a pattern/surface design.

My choice to work with this subject matter and these techniques is the foundation for my creative work and makes for a delightful day in the studio!
